 | Clever Plays In The Trump Suit by David Bird
An intermediate-level discussion of declarer play, this book focuses on the power of the trump suit. Its subjects include trump timing--should you draw all the defenders' trumps straight away, some of their trumps, or perhaps perform some other vital task first? -- and situations where you need to unblock in the trump suit or to put a defender on lead with a trump. The reader will learn how to make maximum use of the entries provided by the trump suit, and how to perform a trump safety play or a trump avoidance play. Two other important topics are how to make your contract against a bad trump break and how you can survive a forcing attack on the long-trump holding. Later chapters explain how to play contracts with fewer than eight trumps at your disposal, and also how to conjure extra tricks from the trump suit. Every couple of chapters or so, there is a 9-problem quiz section. | Item #1859

 | Getting In To The Bidding by Bill Treble
In the modern game, the majority of auctions are competitive, and every improving player needs to acquire the tools to handle this kind of bidding. This text covers the basic building blocks of competitive bidding (takeout and negative doubles, preempts, overcalls, competing over their notrump openings and dealing with competition over your own, forcing pass auctions, the Law of Total Tricks, and others). It describes a number of useful conventions and gadgets with which the reader needs to be familiar, and suggests other optional treatments for partnership discussion. Each chapter ends with reviews and quizzes, and the final chapter is a summary quiz covering all the material. This book will fill a major gap in bridge literature--most books on this topic are intended for expert-level players. | Item #1861

 | One Trick At A Time by Jim Jackson
This is not a book for players who win regularly at their local bridge club--it is for those who don't, but would like to. The author does not claim to be a top-level expert, and admits that he made many mistakes on his way to earning the coveted title of Life Master. This book is intended to help others avoid those same mistakes and to learn from those that they do make. Written in a conversational, non-technical style, this is a book that will help any intermediate player become a better bidder, a better declarer, a better defender, and a better partner--the recipe for becoming a winner. | Item #1860

 | The Rodwell Files The Secrets Of A World Bridge Champion by Eric Rodwell with Mark Horton
In this ground-breaking book, Eric Rodwell reveals for the first time his unique approach to the play of the cards. Then he moves on to a host of innovative ideas in card play: strategies and tactics that can be used by declarer or defenders, each one illustrated with real-life examples from top-level play. Rodwell also talks about the mental side of the game: areas where players often go wrong in their approach to a problem, and the key differences between an average player and a successful one. | Item #1786

 | A First Book Of Bridge Problems by Patrick O'Connor
Comprises fifty problems in declarer play and defense for the beginning player, presented in approximate order of difficulty, with emphasis on planning the play at the first trick. The hands are presented to the reader as they would encounter them playing at the table. Unlike in a textbook, where topics are introduced systematically, there is no clue as to what type of play is required. Experienced players recognize certain standard situations without having to work them out. This does not apply to novices, who spend a lot of mental effort on them. The book will help the novice player to develop their recognition of these situations.

 | Defensive Signalling at Bridge by David Bird
The author begins this thorough discussion of a neglected but vital topic by examining the real purpose of defensive signalling, and the basic kinds of signals that are available. He goes on to recommend a comprehensive set of signalling agreements, and analyzes more complex situations in the light of these agreements. Most of the chapters are followed by a quiz, the answers to which will demonstrate the effectiveness of the recommended signal. The book finishes with a chapter that looks at the signalling methods of eight world-class pairs, with examples of their methods in action. A book any player looking to improve their results will want to read. | Item #1757

 | Simple Squeezes Second revised edition by Anthony Moon
This is the first book in a series of eight on Bridge Squeezes and introduces the subject. It is aimed at experienced players who are ready to improve their playing ability and wish to understand more about these fascinating positions. Each position is shown as a diagram showing the cards remaining and how the position is played. There are then several examples taken from actual play, which are drawn from several sources--the author's own experience, friends, books and newspaper articles. These examples show how the basic position was reached and the preparation needed to achieve it. The key requirements for a squeeze are explained in simple terms and each type of threat encountered is described and named. The five fundamental attributes and requirements for a squeeze are developed and explained and their relevance in executing a simple squeeze is developed. There is also a chapter with basic advice on how to defend against squeezes; this complex subject is further developed in the later books in the series. This second edition describes 34 positions and includes 93 example deals. Simple squeezes are fairly common and represent approximately half of those encountered at the table. | Item #1785

 | Winning Notrump Leads by David Bird & Taf Anthias
To discover which opening lead is best from a given West hand against a particular auction, the authors use computer software to generate 5000 deals that match the North-South bidding. (The West hand remains the same and the other three hands are chosen randomly.) The software then plays these deals automatically, seeing which of the 13 possible opening leads works best at both IMPs (rubber bridge/Chicago) and matchpoint pairs. By analyzing the results, the authors pass on to the reader the secrets of finding the best lead against notrump contracts on a wide range of different auctions. | Item #1854

 | Bridge Books In English 1886-2010 An Annotated Bibliography by Tim Bourke and John Sugden
Interest in Bridge book collecting has steadily increased over the last decade or more, and relatively common older books, which the editors could formerly find several times a week on the shelves of secondhand bookshops, are now rarely seen. The switch to internet trading has been only partially responsible, but has had a number of unfortunate consequences, besides the excessive inflation of asking prices for many works. Chief amongst these is the inability to handle a book before buying. Even for sellers of the best repute, describing books for sale is a tedious business, and many resort to formularised descriptions of condition backed by their reputations. Collectors need to know what questions to ask, before bidding or purchase, and seeing an image of the item may not be enough. While the possibility of return for refund offers partial protection, it does not cover the increasingly significant postage or shipping costs. This work provides the information. In 1905 and again in 1913 Jessel published works on Card Games and Gaming, which partially concerned Bridge. They are a valuable source, but were not comprehensive nor totally accurate. Fast forward to 1975, and Parris produced a limited bibliography covering 553 works, published in the British Isles 1920-1969. For lack of precedent, a remarkable effort. He was followed in 1984 by Sachen in America with a Reference Guide including 605 books. Both these were annotated. And there the options end. Apart from the increasingly extensive lists of titles including in the ACBL's Encyclopedias, which are prepared by one of the editors of the present work, there has until now been no comprehensive source detailing what exists. | Item #1759
